Hser Moo was born in Kler Lwee Hto. She graduated from Kaw Moo Rah High School and completed her medical training at Ya Dai Ni, Mar Ner Plaw. Previously, she volunteered as a healthcare worker along the Thai-Burma border and in rural areas lacking medical care for seven years. Subsequently, she transitioned to work with the Burma Refugee Scholarship Program, now known as the Thabyay Foundation, serving as an accountant and administrator. Hser Moo's hobbies include writing and singing, and her ambition is to promote leadership and advocacy among Karen youth.
Mandy Say was born in the Mae Ka Kee refugee camp and raised in the Mae La Oon refugee camp in Thailand. She later immigrated to the U.S. with her family. She graduated high school in 2020 and is now at San Diego State University (SDSU) pursuing a degree in Social Work. Outside of her academic pursuit, she is the Youth Program Coordinator at the Karen Organization of San Diego (KOSD) and, in 2023, was elected Vice President of Operations for the CKYC. Her goal with the California Karen Youth Connection (CKYC) is to empower Karen youth by providing opportunities to learn about and preserve their cultural heritage while offering support for their personal and academic growth. Her favorite hobby is painting.
Hsa Bwe is the current General Secretary of the CKYC Board of Directors and a dedicated CKYC alumnus. Having been actively involved in numerous CKYC programs, events, and initiatives, Hsa Bwe has consistently supported the organization’s mission and vision. His leadership on the Board focuses on enhancing community engagement and promoting the development of youth. With a deep commitment to CKYC’s values, Hsa Bwe continues to inspire and contribute to the organization’s growth and success.
Joanna Pho was born and raised in Myanmar and came to the United States in 2023 to study abroad. She is pursuing Environmental Studies at Ohlone Community College after graduating from "Hsu" Private High School in Mandalay, Myanmar. Joanna's goal is to utilize her skills and capabilities to empower her people, uplift her society, and create a meaningful, lasting impact on the world. She enjoys playing the piano, journaling, and watching FRIENDS in her free time.
Peace Hsin is the current Board Treasurer of the California Karen Youth Connection where she plays a vital role in managing the organization’s financial strategy and sustainability. A dedicated member of the Bakersfield Karen Community, Peace is deeply committed to supporting both her community and the mission of CKYC. She tirelessly works to fundraise, raise awareness, and ensure that the needs of the Karen youth and families are met through education, advocacy, and empowerment initiatives. Her leadership and passion make her a key figure in driving positive change and fostering a stronger, more united Karen community in California.
Peter is a current CKYC board member and a nursing student at Unitek. He enjoys outdoor activities whenever possible.
